The A Team

Their trail has been blazed by Olympic legends Catherine Freeman and Nova Peris. But the road to Olympic glory is not an easy one. For the eleven Indigenous athletes making their way to Beijing next month, this is the culmination of many weeks, months and even years of hard work.

Many other athletes missed out, despite their obvious talent and many achievements. Champion sprinters Joshua Ross, Patrick Johnson and Otis Gowa all failed to win an Olympic berth, despite spectacular performances on the track throughout the season. Last year’s NAIDOC Sportsperson of the Year, long-jumper Robbie Crowther also didn’t make the cut. For these athletes, there will be another four years of waiting, working and hoping before opportunity arises again.

But for our A Team, the Olympic dream has arrived – the chance to represent their country; the chance to strive for that greatest of all sporting accolades – an Olympic gold medal.
