Mundine on track for middleweight showdown

Fighting for only the second time in the middleweight division, Anthony Mundine outpointed Uruguayan opponent Rafael Sosa Pintos over ten rounds at the Whitlam Centre in Sydney’s West last night.

While the two time super middleweight champion entered the ring in an unusually subdued mood, once the opening bell sounded the Aboriginal boxer was all business, quickly assuming control of the fight and punishing Pintos with some telling body shots in the early exchanges.

North joins new A-League franchise

Socceroo defender Jade North has become the first big name signing of the new North Queensland A-League franchise that will begin competing in the 2009/10 season.

After recently missing out on a European contract, North may now remain on Australian shores long term after the North Queensland franchise presented the 26 year-old with a lucrative offer.

Dreamtime Team defeat Maori 34 - 26

A scintillating two try performance by former Penrith and new South Sydney recruit Rhys Wesser sparked the Indigenous Dreamtime Team to a 34 to 26 win over the New Zealand Maori yesterday.

In a highly entertaining game played in front of a crowd of 10, 000 fans at the Sydney Football Stadium, the Maori were the first to strike, crossing in the opening minutes of the match before Canberra winger Justin Carney equalised in the 18th minute for the home team. read more

When Jessica Mauboy walked onto the Sydney Opera House Concert Hall stage to present an award at the Deadlys last month, an audible gasp ran through the audience.

With her hair swept up and wearing a flowing pink gown, it was clear the shy teenager first seen on Australian Idol has grown into a beautiful and confident young woman.

She’s also a talented and successful young woman, with a Top 5 single, an album due out before Christmas, an upcoming national tour and the lead role in the film version of the hit musical Bran Nue Dae, all before her 20th birthday!

“Performing at the Deadlys felt so good, I had so much fun,” she says. “Everything’s just coming together really well at the moment and I think that showed.”

The National Indigenous Basketball and Hip Hop Challenge – the Vibe 3on3® – returned to Kempsey for the fifth time, and as usual, was another great success with over fifty teams participating.

The community turned out in force to experience the new-look, “Super Saturday” event at Melville High School, on Saturday, October 18, with local participants’ smiling faces joined by visitors from South West Rocks, Crescent Head and Macksville.
